Welcome to Maker Island. What was just an idea, after months of planning and designing, Maker Ø has officially launched. What began as a initial idea to create a portfolio website it grew into a bigger project.
Maker Island emerges as a platform for learning and innovation: a place to play, to create, to learn, to mentor, to invent. Becoming a platform to share the knowledge from both successes and setbacks from those same explorations.
I'm seeking to explore approaches to design that are more collaborative and distributed as a means to create better products built from a bottom up approach, simultaneously creating beautiful solutions to everyday problems.
I started this project with the premise that a Maker lives isolated on his own "Island" developing his/hers own project either on his/hers garage or workshop, but I believe that a huge global shift is happening thanks to the growing community influence from the Maker Movement, the rapid access/sharing of knowledge through the Internet and finally the ease of sharing/replicating projects through Open Design and Digital Fabrication.
For these same reasons we need to rethink, together, how we design and produce the products of the future, using more distributed and participatory approaches.
Where will this journey take us to? Who knows!? Focussing on the way we do it, rather than the outcome is often more important.
In the end the dots will connect, as we believe at Maker Island on the power to - Be your own prototype!
